The Importance Of Colour For Your Mental Health

We’re all a lot more switched on to our mental health these days, but there’s still a lot we don’t know about it, particularly when it comes to looking after it. Over the last few years we’ve had to concentrate more and more on it, with higher levels of anxiety, depression and addiction than ever before around the world.

And while many of us may have to look to the likes of drug detox, counselling and therapy to really get to the root of the problem and set off on a journey to recovery, for others just some simple tweaks can do the world of good.

You may be surprised to hear that colour is such an important factor when it comes to mental health and how the surroundings we are in play a big part in it. And different colours can have a different impact on your mental health too.

Which, as you’d expect, is vitally important when it comes to things such as decorating your home, or even choosing an outfit for the day.

So, what colours can improve your mental health?

Blues and Greens

Blues and greens are commonly found in the home, and for good reason. The natural tones of the colours are perfect for creating a more calming and relaxing atmosphere. They create a rejuvenating environment and are ideal for places such as the bedroom, where we go to sleep and revitalise. The colours in your surroundings contribute towards that feel. If you’re in a room that offers tranquillity, then you’re much more likely to get a good sleep.

The same applies to the bathroom. Blues and greens in the space are much more likely to lead to a relaxing bath than a red bathroom, for example.

Red and Pinks

There is a space for reds and pinks though in improving mental health, particularly when it comes to work. Red and pink can inspire passion and energy, while purples will also boost creativity and productivity.

There’s a great deal of difference between working from home in a grey room, and one that is bursting with colours that will improve your energy levels and inspiration. You will find working more fulfilling, less stressful and improve your mental health on a day-to-day basis.

Orange and Yellows

Orange and yellow colours are also important for boosting energy, while they are also proven to stimulate appetite too. Bold oranges and yellows are full of life, so while you wouldn’t want them in the bedroom, a place of rest, they can be fun and vibrant in the likes of the kitchen where we are looking to stimulate our appetites and socialise. After all, they’ll always find us in the kitchen at parties.
